Professional make-up artist, founder and CCO of Bobbi Brown cosmetics

Bobbi Brown is known for her hugely successful cosmetics brand that is sold all over the world. She had always been interested in makeup ever since playing with her mother’s as a young child and it was her mother who led her to the idea of studying makeup professionally. She honed her skills, getting a degree in theatrical makeup from Emerson College and has said that “when I found Emerson, I found myself.” After graduating she went to New York City to work as a professional makeup artist.

At this point it was the 1980s and Brown wasn’t a fan of the brash, unnatural makeup trends of the time and her natural approach made her stand out amongst all the over-the-top styles. She was frustrated by the lack of natural looking products available and, simply put, she saw a gap in the market and decided to create her own products to fill it. She worked with a chemist to create her first lipstick shade and things went from there.

Just four years after its launch, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics was acquired by Estee Lauder but Brown retained complete creative control, allowing her to fully realise the vision she had for her products. She has also written eight books about makeup and beauty, is the Contributing Beauty and Lifestyle editor of Health Magazine and Beauty and Lifestyle editor of the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show radio broadcast. In 2013, Brown launched the Pretty Powerful Campaign, a global initiative dedicated to funding non-profit organisation that empower women and girls through education. Today, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics is the number one makeup artist brand founded by a woman and is available in over 60 countries.

I find Brown inspiring because she knew exactly what she liked and wanted and wasn’t afraid to go against the grain to create something she believed in. There is something so authentic about her and her approach to her products and business, you really get the sense that she truly follows her intuition. She is not just a role model because she makes pretty makeup, she revolutionised her industry and is one of the top names in it to this day with her brand being the number one makeup artist brand created by a woman. Her approach to makeup and beauty itself is also wonderful. She says, “Beauty isn’t about looking perfect. It’s about celebrating your individuality” and she has iterated this idea time and time again.
